house concerts
House concerts are a great way to introduce the music of your favourite musicians to your friends, family and community. The informal setting allows for a very intimate musical experience. I have had the great pleasure of doing many of these across North America over my years of touring and they are often more enjoyable than the soft seat concert hall gigs because the connection with the audience is so immediate and relaxed.
It’s very easy to host a house concert. It’s basically a social event with music as the focus for a portion of the evening. A typical house concert goes like this: guests assemble at a prescribed time, there will be a period of mingling, then a musical performance of about 45 minutes or so, then some more mingling, and another 45 minute set, and then more mingling. Guests can, and often, bring beverages and munchies (just like any other party). They also make a donation of generally between $10 and $20 to the performer. If this sounds like fun to you and you have about 25 to 30 people who you know would like to attend such an event then I’d be pleased to be that musical focal point. I’ll leave my smoke machine and light show at home and be pleased to arrive with my guitars, ready to share an evening of music and stories behind the songs with you and your guests.
